do you have to watch if, say, you’re flipping channels and you get the movie in the first 10 or so minutes?
Surely, The Shining

Die hard
Fight club
Pulp fiction
Big lebowski
Fast and furious (all of them)
Among many others

That’s a good list. I’d throw Predator in there too.

Die Hard - a great Christmas movie. And Big Lebowski - that’s the SigOther’s movie. And she’ll watch Godfather, and Godfather II anytime.

Strangely, I’ve not seen Predator. Seen every Terminator movie though .... And I’m allegedly a movie buff.

None really, I rarely re-watch movies. Kubrick movies are rare exceptions.

I will watch The Shining anywhere, anytime. Got the bluray. It is so well done. It’s clear why he did so many takes.

I love this movie and will drop most things to watch it.

Wow, I haven’t seen the original In-Laws in years. Great movie. I’d add Raiders of the Lost Ark; The Blues Brothers; On Her Majesty’s Secret Service; Pee Wee’s Big Adventure; John Carpenter’s The Thing; Caddyshack; Where Eagles Dare; The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly; The Bad News Bears; and either of the Raid movies.

The ones I can think of right now, though there probably are more:
Fast & Furious (especially Tokyo drift)
James Bond (especially Brosnan or Craig ones)
Snatch
The Transporter (doesn’t matter which one, though the early ones are better)
The Italian Job (Both original and remake)
Gone in 60 seconds (Both original and remake)
Just realise these are quite plot-less movies. I do like movies with better plots too, however I’m not that likely to watch one when flipping channels, but only watch then if I feel the need to put a movie on.

What’s your take on the helicopter shadow?

The Shining is great, although I prefer 2001: and Clockwork Orange.

I should just go ahead and get the bluray, if there is one.

The only George Lazenby Bond movie ... watched it a few years back, and it was better than I’d remembered. And give me Timothy Dalton over Pierce Brosnan any day. Want my Bond dark, like I want my Batman.

I watched Dr. Strangelove for the first time last week in history class because we had taken the AP exam the previous Friday. 10/10 was freaking amazing.

You know, I did not notice it until someone pointed it out, and it doesn’t bother me at this point. How many times in movies have I seen a moving car with the column shifter in Park? So many.

Shawshank Redemption, The Dark Knight, any Fast & Furious movie, any Paul Rudd movie, Shooter, The Avengers, and The Breakfast Club.

Terry Southern script, Peter Sellers in the title role, and a very young James Earl Jones. That movie is brilliant start to finish.

The Dark Knight is the best of the three, although I have all the blurays and would watch any of them right now.

Some of them more than others, but yeah.
I won’t give Batman v. Superman my money, but I’m eager to see if it’s the trainwreck everyone says it.

I did not see Shawshank until last year, at the insistence of SigOther. Very good.

Mean Girls, Ocean’s Eleven (2001), Goldeneye, Love Actually, Bring It On. Some (all?) of these are kind of mindless, so I can leave them on in the background as I do other things.

Did not like Pierce Brosnan as Bond, but Goldeneye is definitely his best outing as Bond, and his first, I believe. Craig is dark and a killer, which is reflective of the Bond in the novels. And to give this post an automotive slant - the only Bond to never drive an Aston in a movie? Roger Moore.

Well, it doesn’t get much darker than the end of that Lazenby film. That one’s always been my favorite Bond. It has everything. A great girl, then a bunch of girls, a great Blofeld, terrific stunts. And, Lazenby works well. He’s kind of the middle ground between Connery and Moore. Dalton was very underrated. Although he gets a little hammy at times. He just didn’t get the best scripts in the series. But, not as bad as some of those Brosnan movies. Those were the dregs. At least the worst Roger Moore ones have a camp factor that makes them watchable.

I just realized I forgot to mention Goodfellas. That’s got a permanent spot.

Brosnan never decided whether he wanted camp or dark, and the movies are reflective of the failure to make an acting choice. And few people know that Lazenby was offered a second go, but turned it down because a friend talked him out of it - the 60s sensibilities and all that. Dalton was offered a 3rd movie, but the litigation over the Blofeld storyline delayed the production so long that Dalton had to seek other work.

That’s not a must watch for me, but it’s up there. And I should have said Red Sun - Toshiro Mifune kicking kicking the shit out of Charles Bronson? Sign me up.

And yes (SPOILER ALERT!) for a 46 year old movie - Diana Rigg gets shot in the head. With SPECTRE, they set it up perfectly to remake the ‘69 movie, but with Sam Mendes out and Craig unlikely to do the 5th movie he signed on for, who knows what’s next?
And people hold out hope that Ydris Elba will be the next Bond. I’d love that, but it’s unlikely unless they choose to do the stories where Bond was older. Elba would be excellent, but it takes them 10 years to make 4 movies, and he’ll be too old for Barbara Broccoli and crew. He’s 43 now - on the other hand, Roger Moore was 57 when he did his last Bond film - A View To a Kill. For me, that one is among the 3 worst Bond movies. Tanya Roberts is atrocious, and Moore is barely better. Christopher Walken is the villain, and you can google Roger Ebert’s criticism of the plot to see how dumb that movie was. Only Grace Jones delivers on action sequences.

In one of the trailers for SPECTRE they used part of the On Her Majesty’s... theme, so I was expecting some kind of reference to the old movie. Maybe something had been planned. I’m ready for a new Bond, I think. Idris Elba would be terrific. But, they probably will go younger if they get someone new. I always liked the idea of Clive Owen taking over, but that was 12-15 years ago. I actually think that kid who plays the new Q is a good actor who could do it, but that would be a weird transition.
Grace Jones is the one saving grace of A View To a Kill. I remember there are a couple good stunts, though. That was one reliable aspect of those films.
I got to meet Lazenby once and he told the story of turning down another movie. He was with a hip crowd and Bond was seen as square. He has always regretted it, unsurprisingly. It would interesting to visit the alternate universe where it’s him instead of Moore.

The last 10 or so minutes are absolutely fantastic, and despite the absurdity of some parts, the movie remains so incredibly tense until the end.

True Lies, Hunt for the Red October, Dirty Harry, Magnum Force, The Enforcerer, Road House (terrible movie, but I can’t not watch it), Die Hard, Die Hard with a Vengance, Gross Pointe Blank, Shawshank Redemption, Blues Brothers, Animal House, Lethal Weapon (any, but preferably 2), Red, In the Line of Fire, Absolute Power, Escape from Alcatraz.
I’ll watch all these no matter what point they’re at, even if there’s only 15 minutes left.

In every interview, Lazenby talks about how much he got laid on the set. And when Bond drove away in SPECTRE in the DB5 with a gorgeous woman having quit (we presume) MI6, that’s the setup for him to get married.
Q actor could not step into the role given his role in the franchise. And honestly - I have trouble thinking of someone I’d want in the role. Sure, they announced Daniel Craig, and some had doubts. But the second he burst through that wall in the Casino Royale cold open, we knew he’d knock it out of the park.

I was late to the Shawshank party as well, watched it for the first time maybe 4 or 5 years ago, and parts of it countless times since.

At my advanced age, I had not seen a Stallone movie until last year. I avoided them for a long time. But I watched Rocky, then a couple others. Alright, I kinda get it.

Wow. That’s kind of impressive in a weird way. Another one of my guilty pleasure movies is Assassins, with Stallone, Anyonio Bandaris, and Julianna Moore. It’s not good, but I still like it, and will usually watch it if I see it on.
